Registration Process for Schools New to Early Career Framework (ECF):

As a new school you will be asked to register your ECT with 3 organisations:

  1. The Department of Education (DfE) portal called ‘Manage training for early career teachers (education.gov.uk).Registering with the DfE enables your ECTs /Mentor to be verified. Their information is passed to our delivery partner Education Development Trust (EDT). This then comes to us at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Teaching School Hub.
  2. Complete an expression of interest form with EDT as lead provider for the ‘DfE funded provider route’. CPTSH are the local delivery partner.
  3. Sign- up with an Appropriate Body – Locally this is via the Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council.

When can you start registering September 2022 ECTs?

From 10th May 2022.We would recommend that you start this process after half-term, June 6th onwards as many of you will be recruiting following the final resignation window for teachers.

ECF transfers/changing details and April 22 Cohort 

  1. April Cohort: If you have early career teacher(s) (ECTs) you are employing now and need to register for the April Cohort you can do this until 16th May 2022. If your school is new to the ECF please follow the steps above. 

  2. Transferring an ECT or Mentor into your school who is already partway through the EDT programme. If you don't already have an ECT in your school follow steps 1-3 above for schools new to the ECF.  Once your school has access to the DfE portal you will be asked (after 10th May), to complete additional information about your transferee such as previous school. This will be verified by the DfE and their details will be sent to EDT to provide login details. 
  3. Transferring an ECT into your school who started the ECF with another provider (for example Teach First, Ambition, UCL or Best Practice Network). If you don't already have an ECT in your school follow steps 1-3 above for schools new to the ECF.  Once your school has access to the DfE portal you will be asked (after 10th May), to complete additional information about your transferee such as previous school and provider. This will be verified by the DfE and their details will be sent to EDT to provide login details. 
  4. Changing Induction tutor details, ECT or Mentor details. This is for schools who already have ECTs. Schools, from 10th May, will be able to log in to their DfE portal and make changes to their ECTs/Mentors and Induction Tutor.  This change should improve the speed in reflecting school staff changes.

DfE Funded Provider Led Programme with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Teaching School Hub

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Teaching School Hub will deliver the DfE Funded Provider led ECF as a partner with EDT to all schools, regardless of phase or type.

Our 2-year programme will be delivered by a team of expert facilitators from our Hub area to ensure that we respond to our local contexts.

Skills and Expertise Required for the role: 

  • Significant teaching experience (at least 5 years) 
  • Significant experience of supporting Early Career Teachers (or NQTs)
  • Knowledge of the areas of practice outlined in the Early Careers Professional Development Programme curriculum  
  • Strong up-to-date understanding of education research and evidence and how this relates to teaching practice  
  • Deep knowledge of the most effective pedagogical approaches and how children and young people develop and learn  
  • Understanding of best practice in terms of teaching and learning  
  • Experience of teacher training and development, specifically supporting Early Career Teachers to improve their teaching practice  
  • Experience of facilitating and of delivering a wide variety of training 
  • Experience of being a mentor or supporting a mentor 
  • Experience of delivering training remotely e.g. webinars/meetings  
  • Open to feedback and willing to continually learn and improve.

Introduction to the Early Career Framework

The Early Career Framework (ECF) is transforming the support and development offer for teachers at the start of their career. From September 2021, all Early Career Teachers (the newly adopted term to describe what has been newly and recently qualified teachers) will be entitled to the following support based on the Early Career Framework:

  • 2 years of new, funded, high-quality training available either as a DfE funded provider
  • Funding for 5% time away from the classroom for teachers in their second year
  • A dedicated mentor, with support for these mentors including access to funded high-quality training
  • Funding to cover mentors’ time with the mentee in the second year of teaching
  • Further funding for schools opting for the DfE Funded Provider approach for mentors to access training from the lead provider.

What are the options for delivering the new statutory induction programme?

There are three options available to schools for the delivery of the new statutory induction programme.

DfE Funded Provider

Schools are encouraged by the Department for Education (DfE) to choose a funded provider (formerly known as the Funded Induction Programme or FIP), approach to induction. This is a free-to-use training programme that offers high-quality training for Early Career Teachers and their mentors, delivered by an external provider, to complement the self-study and mentor sessions. This is the easiest option for schools and also allows them to benefit from the highest level of financial investment made by the DfE.

DfE Accredited Materials to deliver your own programme 

Schools opting for the DfE-accredited materials option to deliver your own programme (formerly known as the Core Induction Programme (CIP)) approach to induction will be able to draw upon the ECF materials developed by lead providers (national organisations commissioned by the Department for Education (DfE) to create the materials). Schools will need to self-fund the design, and deliver the Early Career Teacher and mentor training themselves. 

Design and deliver your own ECF-based programme

Schools opting to use a school-based programme of induction will receive no support from the Department for Education (DfE) in creating or procuring their own programme, subject/phase-specific coaching and training for mentors in line with the Statutory Guidance.

Schools who choose to deliver their own induction programmes, whether using DfE accredited materials or the ECF itself, will need to provide information to their Appropriate Body to demonstrate that their programme fulfils statutory requirements. Schools should contact their Appropriate Body for further details of what will be required. This will not be required of schools who use the DfE funded provider route.

Funding

The Early Career Framework programme is free to schools. Details of the funding schools will receive in Year 2 are summarised here. 

Schools will receive:

  • Per Early Career Teacher: £1,200
  • Per mentor: £900
  • Schools accessing the DfE Funded Provider will receive an additional £1576.10 ( covers year 1 and 2) for mentors to access training from the lead provider

Key features of our programme - for Early Career Teachers

The key features of our 2-year programme for Early Career Teachers are:

  • Face-to-face and webinar sessions, exploring effective classroom practice across settings, phases and specialisms 
  • Regional and local training sessions 
  • Regular mentoring sessions with a focus on learning, practising, and reflecting
  • Opportunities for reflection and discussion as well as carefully timed self-study ‚Äč

Key features of our programme - for mentors:

Excellent mentoring will be key to the success of the ECF initiative. This programme is centred around developing the mentor relationship and includes a focussed learning pathway for mentors.

  • We will work with in-school mentors to learn new mentoring and coaching techniques, enabling them to strengthen essential skills that they can use throughout their careers. 
  • Specialist training and support will ensure each mentor is confident in their knowledge of the Early Career Framework and develops their mentoring skills so that the Early Career Teachers they work with get the very best from the programme.
